What Is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

The Dallas Blepharoplasty Procedure

There are two different customizable procedures, one for the upper eyelid and one for the lower. Hover over each box to learn more.

Upper Eyelids

If you have sagging skin and fat above your eyes, Dr. Teotia may suggest upper eyelid surgery. In this surgery, Dr. Teotia will make incisions along the upper eye crease to remove excess skin and fat. Dr. Teotia is adept at performing in-office procedures, which means you’ll be awake, and you will not need to receive general anesthesia.

Lower Eyelids

Similarly, lower eyelid surgery corrects puffiness or bags underneath the eyes. Dr. Teotia will create incisions directly below the lower lash line. The site is similar to where women draw on their eyeliner. Like upper lid surgery, lower lid surgery entails the removal of fat and excess skin. This option can also be performed in the office setting on certain patients.

Candidates for Blepharoplasty

Good candidates are patients usually over age 40, who have a noticeable amount of extra tissue around their eyes that they would like to have removed. If you are not sure whether blepharoplasty is right for you, Dr. Teotia will gladly give you her professional opinion and guide you through the decision-making process.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

We generally suggest that our patients recovering from blepharoplasty need to take approximately one week off of work, although this will vary based on the patient. If you are comfortable with others seeing bruising and swelling, you may return to work sooner. Most swelling and bruising subsides within 7-10 days. During this time, you may have to return to Dr. Teotia’s office to have any non-dissolvable sutures removed.

Patients with contact lenses should plan to keep them out for ten days. Also, you will need to avoid using any makeup around the eyes during this time and exercise great caution when cleaning the eye area. Precaution must be taken during initial healing because any pulling or manipulating of the eyelids can slow the healing process and affect your results. You will also want to avoid any intense exercise for the first week.

While recovering, patients sometimes feel some discomfort, which is manageable with pain medication. Some also notice tightness or dryness as their eyelids heal and settle into their new form and place.

The final results are usually visible within several months. Any scarring that you have will be concealed within your natural eyes creases and will fade almost completely within a year.

FAQS: Eyelid Surgery in Flower Mound with Dr. Teotia

The choice to do any cosmetic surgery is highly personal. It’s best not to rely on any single person or beauty standard to dictate your needs. You must decide for yourself. Dr. Teotia will not pressure you into making any decision you are not ready to make for yourself.
Dr. Teotia uses a local anesthetic to make your experience as comfortable as possible. You will also have the option of using ProNox, which is similar to laughing gas. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by the ease of their operative experience.
The incisions during blepharoplasty occur at the normal creases of the eyelids. As a result, any scarring is rarely visible and will fade over time.
Most patients tend to be in their 40’s or older. However, there is no specific age required.
It will help with wrinkles immediately associated with the eyelids. Crow’s feet, or lines that fan outward from the corners of the eyes, are typically smoothed with skin peels and Botox.

While we recommend taking light daily walks during your recovery to help speed the healing process, you’ll need to avoid doing things that elevate your blood pressure until Dr. Teotia clears you to do so. These activities include bending, lifting, and strenuous exercise. You will also be more susceptible to eye strain and fatigue, so please refrain from excessive reading and screen time in favor of activities that allow you to rest your eyes, like listening to music or audiobooks.

If you wear contacts, we ask you not to put them in for at least 10 days. Also, do not apply moisturizer or makeup products like eyeshadow, eyeliner, or mascara to your surgical sites for at least two weeks after your surgery. You can continue using cosmetics on the rest of your face if you wish.

After surgery, you will likely tire more easily because your body will be spending more resources to heal. Getting plenty of rest will help speed your recovery process. We also suggest staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and being patient with yourself.

Dr. Teotia uses her surgical skills to create customized plans that align with each patient’s goals. Her expertly performed in-office blepharoplasty will not alter your appearance so much that nobody will recognize you. Instead, you will look like a younger, more approachable version of yourself.

To prevent swelling, rest and sleep lying on your back with your head elevated for two weeks, or as directed by Dr. Teotia. You can use pillows to prop up your head and prevent yourself from rolling over onto your side or stomach while you sleep. You can also sleep in a recliner if you prefer, though many people are more comfortable in their beds.

While you can take showers from the neck down any time after your surgery, do not take full showers until Dr. Teotia tells you it is OK to do so. During the early stages of blepharoplasty recovery, use dry shampoo to wash your hair. Once you are in the clear to take full showers, you can wash your hair with “no-tears” baby shampoo.

Temporary swelling, bruising, tightness, dryness, itching, and burning are all typical side effects of eyelid surgery. Please do not rub or scratch at your eyes. Dr. Teotia will prescribe you pain medications, as necessary, to take while you recover. You can also apply cold compresses to your eyes every 10 to 15 minutes for the first 24 hours after your surgery.

Your vision might be blurry for a few days, and your eyes may also be more sensitive to light, so it’s worth investing in a quality pair of UV-blocking sunglasses.
