What is a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery is an exceptional way for you to regain a tighter, more youthful-looking midsection! Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tucks are designed to improve the appearance of the lower stomach region, which is often due to loose, excess skin, lax abdominal muscles, or even the after-effects of childbirth. A tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles (commonly known as the “abs”), eliminates excess skin and, with the help of liposuction, can also remove unwanted fat.

Tummy tucks have grown significantly in popularity over the years and are now one of the most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons. Dr. Teotia is up to date with the very latest tummy tuck techniques that offer better pain management, a more comfortable recovery and, of course, more dramatic results. A partnership with Dr. Teotia means that she will recommend a tummy tuck method that is right for you!

Are There Different Types of Tummy Tuck?

As previously mentioned, Dr. Teotia will use a personalized approach to give you the best results. That said, there are two general categories that can help you better understand your options. Both full and mini tummy tucks involve tightening abdominal muscles and removing excess skin, but there are significant differences between the two procedures, as described below.

If your consultation is virtual, please submit the appropriate pictures of your abdomen. Also, please be ready to review your medical history including current medications.

You will check into the facility approximately two hours prior to the procedure. You will meet with the operating room staff and anesthesiologist before the procedure begins. Your surgery will take about three hours to perform. You will wake up in the post operative care unit and then be transferred to your floor bed if you elect to stay overnight.

You will most likely have one or two drains placed. On average, the drains remain in place for a week. You may shower with your drains in place.

The majority of the patients require an internal corset to move their muscles back to the proper position.

You will lose a number of pounds from excision of your excess lower abdominal skin and soft tissue. However, this surgery should not be viewed as a weight loss technique. Many patients find that exercise is easier following recovery from a tummy tuck, and they lose additional weight from working out.

The majority of sutures will dissolve in time and will not require removal.

Yes. A tummy tuck will not keep you from getting pregnant. However, it is suggested that you wait to have this procedure until you no longer desire (more) children.

Recovery during the first week is about addressing pain control and adjusting to your new body. Patients often experience fatigue during the second week. Most patients state that they feel back to normal by the third week after surgery.

Drains are used to prevent a seroma (internal fluid collection). Any surgery has a risk of bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding structures and change in sensation. The risk of developing a blood clot is higher with a tummy tuck. Patients are encouraged to ambulate soon after surgery and are given a blood thinner after surgery to prevent this complication.

Walking immediately after surgery is highly encouraged. Patients may start light cardiovascular work outs and lift light weights three to four weeks after surgery. Patients should not engage in core activity for six weeks following surgery in order to avoid disrupting the internal corset portion of the procedure.

The pain is tolerable. Exparel, which is a local anesthetic that is injected into the abdominal wall, numbs the abdomen for 72 hours after surgery. Patients are also given prescriptions for narcotic medications.
