Breast Augmentation Questions-Answers

June 2, 2017

If you are considering a breast augmentation procedure, you probably have many questions. Dr. Stephanie Beidler Teotia gives you answers to commonly asked questions.

Q: How long will I be under general anesthesia for a breast augmentation?

A:  The typical case takes a little over an hour. Patients go home the same day.

Q: I’m looking for suggestions for the most comfortable post-op bra.

A:  I ask my patients to wear a sports bra (no underwire) for 6 weeks after surgery. This is to reduce swelling. Patients often select sports bras that close in the front.

Q: How often are post-op appointments for breast augmentation surgery?

A: I see my breast augmentation patients one week following surgery. During this visit, I review the surgery and discuss how to perform breast massaging. I then clear patients for all activities at a 6-week post-op appointment. I like to see patients at 3 and 6 months as well. Long-term follow-up is always encouraged.

Q: When is it okay to resume taking fish oil supplements after a breast augmentation?

A: Patients may resume their supplements one week after surgery.

Q: Can you recommend a scar cream or gel I can apply post-op?

A: I suggest using Biocorneum for scars. It is a topical silicone gel treatment which includes a SPF 30 and has been tested by the FDA. The gel helps soften, flatten, and lighten scars. It is water resistant, and make-up can be worn over the gel.
