If you’ve researched cellulite treatments at all in the last five years, you’ve no doubt seen countless satisfied patients posting impressive before and after photos displaying their Cellfina procedure results. This article will cover the pros and cons of Cellfina vs liposuction, give you information about the procedures from Dr. Stephanie Teotia, Dallas Cellfina and liposuction expert. Which procedure is right for you?

In 2015, liposuction surpassed breast augmentation as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure. Liposuction, the procedure that Hollywood stars have popularized steadily in the last few decades, removes fat cells from targeted areas such as the hips, thighs, and belly.

Because Dr. Teotia is on the forefront of plastic surgery technology, she is able to offer her patients Cellfina. Cellfina is the most exciting cellulite treatment available anywhere in the world. It is minimally invasive, the results are long-lasting, and best of all, it is remarkably safe.

Due to their biology, most women are prone to storing at least ten to fifteen pounds of fat on their hips, thigh, and buttock areas. This fat is often at least slightly dimpled with cellulite because bands of fibrous connective tissue winding through the fat cells.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Although dimples in fat have become known as cellulite, it should be noted that they are purely a cosmetic concern. Cellulite does not represent a buildup of toxins in the body, and it does not mean that you are not physically fit.

Although careful adherence to a diet and exercise regimen–especially one that includes strength training–can sometimes reduce the appearance of dimples on the thigh and buttocks, most women will still see some cellulite even once they have reached their target weight and fitness level.

If you have fat deposits on your thighs, hips, or buttocks that are a concern to you despite your having achieved a healthy body weight, liposuction can target your areas of concern and remove any remaining small amounts of fat.

However, liposuction does not address cellulite, and can even make the appearance of cellulite worse. 85 to 95% of adult women over the age of 24 exhibit some degree of cellulite,  and liposuction doesn’t offer patients the smooth, youthful appearance they often desire when they envision their ideal thigh and buttock areas.

Enter Cellfina.

Cellfina is the first (and only) FDA-approved, minimally invasive procedure that has been clinically proven to permanently improve cellulite, making it the longest acting of any FDA-cleared cellulite treatment.

Cellfina releases the tension created by tight bands of connective tissue pulling the skin down through the fat present on the thighs and buttocks of most women. Like a rubber band that’s been pulled taut, once these bands are released, the pucker or dimple in the skin bounces back and becomes smooth in as few as three days.

Unlike procedures that need to be repeated every few months, Cellfina is a one-time procedure that usually takes less than an hour. Dr. Teotia will carefully mark the dimples you’re concerned about. Then, she and her assistant will administer a local numbing agent, after which the non-invasive treatment begins.

Afterward, you will be able to go about your day, but you may decide you would like to take it easy until the following day. You will see results in as few as three days. Dr. Teotia says that hopefully, Cellfina results are permanent. However, at the moment there are only three years of data collected on Cellfina, and the FDA can’t officially label it “permanent” until the five year mark. Patients that see Dr. Teotia for this procedure have not seen a return of their cellulite!

Because Cellfina is such an impressively powerful remedy for the appearance of cellulite, and because the results look promising, patients are often apprehensive that there may be some hidden danger or serious side effects.

The great news is that there have been no serious or significant side effects associated with Cellfina, even after years of widespread use. The most common side effects that have been reported were mild to moderate soreness, tenderness, and bruising.

At four weeks after the Cellfina cellulite procedure, over 90% of patients had no remaining bruising. Patients usually reached optimal results within 3 months.

If, however, cellulite is not your main concern, and you are instead unhappy with larger bumps or bulges in your overall silhouette that persist despite a healthy lifestyle, you may be an ideal candidate for liposuction.

Liposuction can be used to sculpt targeted areas in a wide variety of areas, including the upper arms, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or even the face and jawline. Liposuction works by reducing the thickness of the fat layer in an area.

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia, and as such it does have the potential for serious risks and side effects. Unlike Cellfina, which can be selected without concern about long-term implications, liposuction requires your careful consideration before you and Dr. Teotia decide whether or not it’s right for you.

Recovery from liposuction will require you to take a few days to rest and recover, and it will be a few weeks before you can return to your normal activities. You will have bruising, swelling, and soreness for a few weeks after the procedure.

If you decide that you want to pursue both liposuction and Cellfina, Dr. Teotia will perform your liposuction first. This will allow her to target any areas of cellulite that remain or are exacerbated by your liposuction.

Note: Liposuction is not for patients with a BMI over 30. Patients are encouraged to reach a healthy, steady weight so that they can evaluate whether or not they still desire liposuction.
