Liposuction

Liposuction near Dallas, TX with Dr. Stephanie Teotia

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body. It does this by removing excess fat deposits to restore your body’s aesthetic contours. Dr. Teotia can use liposuction to address multiple cosmetic concerns, including fat in the thighs, hips, abdomen, back, neck and more.

Despite what many people think, liposuction surgery is not meant to be a weight loss solution. Plastic surgery procedures like liposuction are not a quick fix for obesity and are not a substitute for diet and exercise. Rather, liposuction is a minimally invasive body contouring procedure, and there is a limit as to how much fat tissue a doctor can remove during a procedure, typically up to 11 pounds. However, with advanced body contouring surgery techniques, Dr. Teotia can remove unwanted fat to create a more defined shape.

If you are troubled by stubborn pockets of fat that refuse to go away despite your best dieting and exercise efforts, liposuction could be the answer.

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed today, and it is popular for a good reason. It offers you visible body contouring results with minimal recovery time and discomfort. Liposuction surgery can remove excess fat and reveal your body’s natural contours. Dr. Stephanie Teotia, a board-certified female plastic surgeon serving the greater Dallas area, is ready to partner with you as you proceed along your body contouring journey.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

While Dr. Teotia would like to help all her patients seeking liposuction in Dallas, she genuinely has their best interest in mind. She will conduct a full medical examination before planning your aesthetic surgery in order to ensure that you are safe and prepared for your procedure.
Generally, good candidates need to:

You will need to have a healthy mental outlook about the liposuction procedure. Although patients can achieve dramatic results, you should look for a size reduction that’s ideal for your body shape and maintain realistic expectations

As liposuction does not treat obesity, it’s important to be at a healthy BMI. Typically, this means a BMI or Body Mass Index of 30 or lower. This is a vital aspect needed to gain the best outcome.

Liposuction treats subcutaneous adipose tissue, the pinchable fat that between the skin and muscles, rather than visceral fat that surrounds the organs. To lose visceral fat, focus your weight loss efforts on diet and exercise rather than plastic surgery procedures.

When you remove fatty tissue from an area, your skin needs to shrink to accommodate your new shape. Liposuction does not address excess skin or sagging skin like that after significant weight loss and may negatively impact its appearance.

Smoking blocks blood flow to the skin, which complicates the healing process. If you are a smoker, you will need to quit smoking in order to be a candidate for liposuction.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Some liposuction procedures may only require local anesthesia. If this is the case, Dr. Teotia can perform this procedure from the comfort of her own office. More involved body contouring surgery may employ general anesthesia and will take place in a comfortable and accredited surgical setting. You may be given a sedative, typically through an IV injection, to help you remain calm and relaxed.

Once you’ve been sedated, Dr. Teotia will insert a cannula, or thin tube, into a small incision. Dr. Teotia uses this cannula to break up the fat deposits and suction them out of the body. Once the fat has been adequately removed through traditional liposuction, your incisions will then be closed.

Your procedure’s duration will vary depending on the area and extent of your operation. If you’ve had general anesthesia, you will wake up in a recovery room. When you are ready to leave, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

What Should I Expect During My Liposuction Recovery?

It is normal for patients to experience both bruising and swelling after liposuction. Therefore, the treated area can temporarily appear larger than it did before the procedure. To promote healing and recovery, you may have to take anywhere from three days to a week off from work. Dr. Teotia recommends wearing compression garments for six weeks after surgery to help reduce swelling.

You should also avoid any strenuous activities for at least two weeks or until Dr. Teotia gives her approval. Dr. Teotia will give you a comprehensive list of aftercare instructions to help you manage your liposuction recovery process. She and her team will also be available if you have any issues during this time. Final liposuction results are judged six months after surgery.

FAQS: Liposuction in Dallas with Dr. Stephanie Teotia

There are numerous types of body contouring liposuction techniques that providers may offer (i.e., tumescent liposuction, ultrasound assisted liposuction ual, laser assisted liposuction, power assisted liposuction pal, suction assisted liposuction, large volume liposuction, etc.). During your consultation, Dr. Teotia will decide which surgical procedure is right for you based on your needs and goals.

While you may notice small body contouring improvements immediately afterward, it may take several months to see liposuction’s full effects. Be patient and wear your compression garments as instructed while the residual bruising and swelling continue to subside, and your body adapts to its new contours.

Your liposuction surgery’s duration will vary depending on your customized procedural plan. Removing excess fat from multiple problem areas in one sitting will add to the procedure’s complexity and total time. Dr. Teotia will discuss this with you in your private consultation.

The cost will depend on the extent of your body contouring procedures, which means you will need to consult Dr. Teotia to get an answer that applies to your specific goals. She will work with you to find the most cost-effective solution for your needs.

Liposuction is a body contouring and fat reduction surgery, and it is not an ideal solution for cellulite—a harmless, yet unsightly condition caused by fibrous bands beneath the skin. Fortunately, Dr. Teotia offers minimally invasive Avéli cellulite reduction to improve cellulite’s uneven, “orange-peel” appearance and texture.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that is great for patients who have pockets of excess fat but good skin laxity. For patients who have experienced significant weight loss and have excess skin or loose skin, a tummy tuck may be a better option. Tummy tuck surgery tightens abdominal muscles, removes excess skin and unwanted fat, and more. Additionally, patients can also choose to have a mommy makeover, which is a more comprehensive treatment plan that includes multiple body contouring procedures (tummy tuck, liposuction, breast augmentationbreast lift/ breast reduction, etc.). Dr. Teotia will work with you to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your plastic surgery goals.

During your liposuction procedure, Dr. Teotia physically removes fat cells from your body. Once these fat cells are removed, they are gone forever. However, remaining fat cells in untreated areas will continue to expand if you gain weight, so it is important to maintain your stable weight.

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure designed to remove unwanted fat in stubborn areas that fail to respond to diet and exercise rather than a weight loss procedure. Typically, body sculpting procedures remove up to 11 pounds, but results would suggest you’ve lost more weight. It is best for patients who still struggle with localized fat deposits, despite being at or near their ideal weight.

Liposuction is an effective surgical body contouring procedure to remove fat deposits from many areas, including abdomen, flanks, thighs, hips, arms, back, chest, neck, chin, and even calves or ankles. During your consultation, Dr. Teotia will discuss if multiple areas can be treated in one session and which areas will benefit most from plastic surgery.

Good candidates for plastic surgery procedures like liposuction are at or near their goal weight who may have stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. These candidates do not have extra skin. They should be in good overall health, non-smokers, have realistic expectations, and maintain stable weight for at least 6 to 12 months.

Those who are not good candidates include those who have experienced major weight loss and have excess skin. Liposuction does not address sagging skin.

Before your body contouring procedures, it’s important to maintain your normal weight, stop smoking several weeks before surgery, and discontinue blood-thinning medications as directed. Arrange for someone to drive you home and assist you for 24 to 48 hours, wear loose clothing, prepare a clean recovery space, and fill pain prescriptions in advance. Thoroughly follow Dr. Teotia’s instructions and shower with antibacterial soap the morning of surgery.

Most patients can resume desk work in 3 to 7 days after body contouring surgery, while those with physical jobs may require 2 to 3 weeks off. Light walking is encouraged immediately, gentle cardio at 2 to 3 weeks, and strenuous exercise or weight training at 4 to 6 weeks. Your plastic surgeon will provide a specific timeline based on the extent of your treatment.

Safety guidelines typically limit fat removal to 5 liters (about 11 pounds) in one session, though most procedures remove 2 to 4 liters. Removing excessive amounts increases risks of complications like fluid imbalance, deep vein thrombosis, fat embolism, and prolonged recovery. Large-volume liposuction requires careful monitoring and sometimes overnight observation.

New liposuction techniques can provide minimal skin tightening. However, if you have significant skin laxity, you’ll likely need a lift procedure (tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift) to remove excess skin. During your consultation, Dr. Teotia will specifically assess your skin elasticity to determine if liposuction alone is sufficient for your situation.

Yes. Many of our patients choose to create more comprehensive results by pairing their liposuction surgery with complementary body contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck to address extra skin or weakened muscles or breast augmentation or breast lift to enhance overall body contours. After meeting with you and learning more about what you want to achieve, Dr. Teotia can help you decide if combining other procedures aligns with your cosmetic goals.

Liposuction is not intended to treat obesity. As such, most surgeons opt for patients with BMI under 30 to 35 to ensure optimal safety and results. Higher BMI increases surgical risks and may not achieve desired contouring. A patient’s weight should be at or near their goal to achieve ideal body contouring rather than weight loss.

Possible complications following liposuction and other body contouring procedures may include asymmetry, poor wound healing, fluid accumulation, development of a blood clot and other conditions. Dr. Teotia is highly trained and well prepared to handle any of the associated risks of this procedure. During your consultation and pre-operative appointments, she will review your medical history, give you a full medical examination, and inform you of any potential dangers.

Scarring from liposuction is minimal and typically consists of tiny, inconspicuous marks. These tend to fade over time and are usually well-hidden within natural body creases.

Thanks to Dr. Teotia’s anesthesia options, you will not feel pain during your body contouring procedure. Dr. Teotia will help you control pain or any soreness afterward with prescribed or over-the-counter medications.
